Authenticity is checked detail by detail, first from your photos and then with the bag in hand. No single feature proves a bag is genuine, so we look at how all of them fit together and match the age of the piece.

• Leather: the grain, the feel and how the bag holds its shape at the corners and flap.
• Stitching: Hermès uses a hand-sewn saddle stitch, so the line is even but slightly slanted.
• Hardware: the weight, engraving and finish of the clasp, lock, keys and feet.
• Hermès blind stamp: the year letter and the craftsman's mark, which must suit the age of the bag.
• Goyard: the heat stamp and the serial details inside the bag.

The model and size come first, followed by the leather and colour. A Kelly or Birkin in a classic leather such as Togo, Epsom or Box and a versatile colour is easier to place than a rare combination, though some rare pieces are exactly what collectors want.

Condition is judged at the corners, the handles and the inside, where wear shows first. A full set with the box, dust bag and receipt adds to the offer, because it confirms the bag's history. We do not name a figure before we have seen the details.
